Played in what is a very historic setting Armagh had a couple of changes. In the pack neither Noah Bell or Curtis Pollock were available, so John Glasgow came into the back row along with Thomas Dougan. With Owen O’Kane on international duty with the Irish under 19s Rocky Olsen deputised again at out half and had another fine game.

The sun was shining and a stiff breeze blowing when Armagh kicked off. Both sides were testing each other out in the initial phases, but it was Trinity who got the first points on the board with tries from right winger O’Sullivan and hooker O’Neill. Lynch converted one try to leave Trinity 12-0 up after 20 minutes.

Armagh came back into the game 9 minutes later when Josh Cunningham squeezed over in the corner. Trinity were now giving away penalties and Rocky was judging his kicks superbly to put the ball in the corner. Usually Armagh can score through their lineout and maul but Trinity put a lot of pressure on and nothing materialised from these. Rocky then had a terrific 50-22 but a knock on near the line enabled Trinity to get off the hook. Armagh were not to be denied and with a Trinity player in the sinbin, Connor Neary dived over the line under the posts. Olsen stroked the ball over to level the scores.

12-12 at half time

This gave Armagh a bit more momentum and Rocky used his pace and guile to score the third try. Surprisingly, he missed the conversion. Trinity got back into the lead, with Timmy McNiece who was a real handful all day now, in the sinbin, having high tackled a Trinity player close to the line.

In a well-rehearsed move, flanker Jackson went on the short side to put Trinity back in front. The conversion looked to have missed but referee and touch judges gave it, to put Trinity 2 points up. Armagh then started to chase the game and their enthusiasm in trying to move the ball led to full back Colbert slipping through Armagh’s defence to get their 4th and bonus try. Armagh kept fighting but the Trinity defence was sound and everyone of their players tackled like demons. They just about deserved their win which puts them second in the league one point behind leaders Old Wesley. Armagh drop a place to 6th and have Old Wesley at home next weekend.

In their penultimate fixture, City of Armagh just couldn’t do the double over high-flying Trinity.
