Match Report Feb 1st 2026

Despite the heavy loss against a strong Virginia side last week, City of Armagh Senior Women continued their campaign in the Championship A league on Sunday. The Armagh women produced a heroic performance but were  narrowly defeated 29-28 by Randalstown in their rescheduled Round 2 league fixture, originally due to be played on 11th January.

The hosts made a fast start, crossing for tries 4 times in the first half, with 2 conversions giving them a considerable lead at half time.  Despite the early pressure, Armagh remained composed and competitive throughout the opening period.  Vice-captain Lesley Megarity led from the front, scoring Armagh’s first try on 21 minutes before striking again on the pip of half time, keeping the visitors firmly in contention. Captain Katierose Pickering converted both scores to ensure Armagh stayed within touching distance. Randalstown extended their lead early in the second half with a further try five minutes after the restart, which proved to be their final score of the match.  From that point on, the momentum swung decisively in Armagh’s favour.

Armagh responded with tremendous determination.  Tara Renaghan powered over for her first try of the season, an impressive achievement in only her second appearance before Beth McBurney produced the standout moment of the game – making a spectacular break and showing blistering pace to run in a superb try from distance.  Pickering remained flawless from the tee, finishing the match with another 4 points from conversions. City of Armagh Senior Women defended with huge heart and continued to attack with ambition right to the final whistle, pushing the hosts all the way in a dramatic one point finish.

Despite the disappointment of the result,  Lesley Megarity was deservedly named Maxxpresso DriveThru Player of the Match for an excellent all-round performance, epitomising the grit and leadership shown by this City of Armagh side.  Though the scoreboard showed a narrow defeat, City of Armagh Senior Women can take immense pride from a performance built on courage, fitness and togetherness as they continue their league campaign.
