150th Anniversary Golf Classic

To mark their 150th anniversary,  City of Armagh rugby club recently hosted a very successful Golf Day at both Concra Wood, Castleblaney and County Armagh golf courses with over 170 club members and guests participating. Golfers at Concra Wood teed off early and were well looked after by the club staff. The course was in magnificent condition with the sun shining and a slight wind. It is generally a very tough course to play, but results on the day were reasonably impressive. The best individual scores came from two rugby players, with Barry Finn just pipping his playing partner, Shea O’Brien with 42 points to Shea’s 40. With their playing partners Antoine Finn and Ross Finn, they had the best team score of 99 points at the very difficult course. The second team prize in Concra went to the 4 ball comprising of Brendan Mc Aleavey, Cathal Short, Gerry Brennan and Pearce Hughes with a score of 96 points, while four Armagh ladies, Ellen Brady, Flo McCall, Joy Steenson and Geraldine Rafferty had 94 points and came in third. The longest drive at Concra Wood was Shane O’Hagan while Cathal Short was nearest the pin.

At County Armagh the scores were much better, with the course also in excellent condition. First overall was Peter Hazelton’s 4 ball comprising of Stephen Kellett, Paul McAneaney and Julian Kenny with a score of 103. In second place was Clarence Morrow’s team with 100 points. In fact, there were a number of teams on 100 points with Ben Scott’s 4 ball securing third place with a better back nine ahead of Joe McMahon’s and Eric Clarke’s teams. Ellie Clarke was the second best individual on 45 points, losing out to Carolyn McCall who had a magnificent 47 points. Jamie Donaldson won the longest drive in Armagh with Mark Jennings using all his skill, (or luck) to record a terrific shot 38 inches from the pin on the 18th.

All competitors received a goody bag and were served a sumptuous steak back at the club, provided by Johnny Atkinson and his marvellous volunteers. A huge thank you to Noel Conn, Raymond Donnelly and their team of volunteers who made the whole event a tremendous success.
